It was the Greeks who earned the accolade for inventing the sausage more than 2,500 years ago and since then it has stood the tests of time as one of the world's ultimate convenience foods.

Internationally, thousands of recipes have been devised, including localised delights like Lincolnshire, Cumberland, Bologna, Lyons and Berliner and, almost without exception, the sausages have been made in links of varying lengths and thickness encased in a skin which might or might not be natural.

Despite this lack of invention, innovation and enterprise it is estimated that sausages feature in a least half a billion meals in this country every year.

Now, our innovative brains in the new product development department have unveiled the biggest change in sausage making and marketing in three centuries. They have launched:

The Spherical Sausage!

Snowbird has stayed true to its award-winning recipes for pork, Lincolnshire and Cumberland and made them all gluten free at the same time.

"This might be a small step for mankind but in the sausage firmament it is a great leap forward," said Snowbird joint managing director, Philip Paul.

Like their traditional counterparts, Snowbird's child-friendly Spherical Sausages are fully cooked and frozen as part of the factory process so they can be heated from frozen in a microwave in seconds or batch prepared in an oven. And, true to the Snowbird quality ethos, they are all made with British pork from outdoor bred pigs reared on Red Tractor approved farms.

Initially, these unique spherical sausages will be exclusively for the foodservice and ready meals sector.

They are available in bulk and in units of varying quantities.

A Mighty Meaty Sharing Platter

Chilli Meat Balls is the latest product to emerge from the new product development department at Snowbird foods.

Whilst best known for its fully cooked sausages, Snowbird has developed a wide range of fully cooked meat balls which are doing duty as meal centres, bun and wrap fillings and even pizza toppings.

Designed to appeal to sophisticated adult palates, Chilli Meat Balls have a beef content of 70% and the blend of seasonings includes black pepper, oregano, coriander, cumin, chilli, paprika and garlic.

In food service test markets 15 and 20g have proved the most popular sizes although balls can be made in sizes up to 50g.

“Chilli Meat Balls have proved popular with adults although they are definitely not for the faint hearted,» said Snowbird Joint Managing Director, Philip Paul.

The Hut’s Amazing Cheeseburger Crust Pizza

When the management team at Pizza Hut decided it wanted to hit the streets with an exciting new idea a really great fully cooked beef burger was needed. Pizza Hut turned to Snowbird foods, having found it to be reliable and a speedy solutions provider in the past.

And Snowbird really delivered, enabling Pizza Hut to introduce an amazing Cheeseburger Pizza to the delight of its customers.

The Cheeseburger Pizza is made with ten mini 100% British beef burgers which are cooked into the pizza crust and then topped with mozzarella cheese. It is the latest in a line of successful innovations from the brand, which has also created and launched Cheese Stuffed Crust, Hotdog Stuffed Crust and Cheesy Bites pizza bases.

Following a successful campaign in September 2013 when the cheeseburger pizza was launched – it’s now back on the menu again from today for a limited time only, and now available with bacon as an optional, additional topping. So now many more customers can enjoy the product and delight in its quality and sharing convenience.

Another money-spinning idea for mid-spend profit sector restaurants has been developed by those innovative brains in our fast-moving new product development department.

As the leader of the niche foodservice market for fully cooked and frozen sausages, Snowbird has added a new flavour to its growing portfolio of products that will heat for service in seconds in a microwave or in minutes in an oven.

Pork & Spiced Chorizo Sausages weigh in at 50g. and have a pork content of 80 per cent.

Presented in beef collagen casings and oven baked to a golden brown in the factory before being individually quick frozen, these innovative new speciality sausages contain diced chorizo and are seasoned with smoked paprika, salt, black pepper, ginger, parsley and garlic.

In addition to being an ideal centre for plated meals, the new sausages will also add spice to a barbecue.

“Our special chorizo is an ideal solution for those restaurants looking for a sausage that is so different their outlet will stand out from the crowd and attract repeat business,” said Joint Managing Director, Philip Paul.

He added that in-house tests had shown the chorizo sausage was sufficiently well spiced to perform as a meal centre accompanied by potatoes (including mash), fried and boiled rice, pasta, noodles, mixed vegetables, salads and in casseroles.

Putting pzazz into Christmas

Snowbird foods has put pzazz into the festive season with our Christmas Crackers which are a convenient and up-to-the-minute alternative to old-fashioned and fiddly Pigs in Blankets. These cracking Crackers are fully cooked and frozen 25g chipolata sausages made from moist and tender turkey thigh meat and flavoured with quality diced bacon and cranberries.

A great Christmas meal accompaniment, they are equally suitable as a buffet item as they can be eaten hot or cold. The savoury meat is complemented by the sharp, sweet taste of the cranberries and our unique blend of herbs and spices delivers an exciting eating experience.

Low fat, low salt, low carbohydrate and always high quality.

From frozen, Christmas Crackers can be microwaved (in seconds) or oven baked to 72˚C, have a wonderful golden brown colour and will hold under lights for long periods.

Reheating Guidelines:

Microwave from frozen 800w: 1 x 25 gram cracker = 30 seconds.
Oven bake from frozen 200˚C: 1 x 25 gram cracker = 3 minutes.
Adjust timings for product quantity and size.
Check core temperature of 72˚C has been achieved.
Return to microwave or oven if further heating is necessary.

High speed hot dog New York style!

Snowbird has added a new dimension to the burgeoning UK street food scene with the development of a proudly British version of the iconic New York Hot Dog.

In the place of a pink, bendy and finely minced dog, Snowbird is presenting a traditional British sausage made of bowl chopped (not minced) quality cuts of pork which it fries and oven bakes in the factory to a uniform golden brown before freezing.

The iconic hot dog flavour profile is added to this familiar texture by a complex yet balanced recipe which features rapeseed oil, both standard and smoked salt, rubbed marjoram, standard and smoked black pepper, garlic, coriander and ginger.

The all British New York Hot Dog (made in London!) can be produced in a variety of sizes from chipolata upwards, but research has identified 100g as ideal because this weight delivers a 28mm sausage which gives a good filling to a standard hot dog roll.

"This is a quality British twist on a traditional American street snack because our quality recipe in a beef collagen casing delivers a texture which is familiar to British sausage eaters and has a great flavour which is borrowed from the New World," said Joint Managing Director, Philip Paul.

Whilst outdoor eating is the norm for street food style products, Snowbird sees the New York Hot Dog as of a suitable quality to be presented as a plated meal centre with fries, salads and other interesting accompaniments.

It can be heated from frozen in a microwave (in seconds) and can also quickly be oven baked, griddled, grilled or even fried. It is packed in 4 kilo cases.

Big Future for Mini Meat Bites

In a major expansion of its services to further manufacturers, Snowbird has unveiled an exciting new convenience product. Mini Meat Bites, at around 4g each, are irregular tube shaped pieces of pork, beef, lamb, chicken or turkey – or selected combinations of the meats.

The Bites have already been successfully test marketed by international pizza and ready meals manufacturers and have immediately proved attractive to wraps, sandwiches, lunch box and snack pot manufacturers as well as pizza and ready meals companies and the products are already selling as part of prepared products in one of the UK’s top five supermarkets.

Careful attention to colour has improved visibility of the bites when sprinkled on pizzas and the increased number of bites means flavour delivery is enhanced throughout entire products.


Gluten Free Lamb Kofte

The challenge seemed impossible but it has been achieved. Snowbird has succeeded in generating the definitive taste of a gluten-free lamb kofte - and it only took 23 precisely weighed ingredients to achieve that target!

The result is presented as a 20g. fully cooked and frozen, irregularly tube-shaped mini kofte, 92% of which is British lamb drawn from Red Tractor approved sources.

Other ingredients include onion, potato starch, lemon juice, salt, mustard seeds, garlic powder, red bell peppers and crushed chillies, all spiced with black pepper, cardamom, cloves, cumin, ginger, chilli, nutmeg, paprika and salt.

To complete this hugely complex recipe, Snowbird has added coriander, mint, crushed chillies, parsley and thyme.
